Mindless Self Indulgence came back to LA to support their new album. I
first saw them live opening for Rammstein back in 1999 and thought they
sucked. Now I can't get enough of them.
This show
was pretty weird. The crowd skewed very young. There were plenty of
cosplayers on the floor. Seated next to me was a teenager accompanied
by her parents.
MSI have never added much to their stage
show. They rely on high energy and silly stage maneuvers. A lot of
songs have singalongs. It's a very fun show.
Last night I went to leetUP at Club Nokia. I really had no idea what to expect. When I got there, Jimmy Pardo was warming up the crowd. Kevin Pereira then came out to talk with Felicia Day, Alex Albrecht and Harley Morenstein. After that segment, they made it rain bacon while setting up an audience participation bit. They had two guys come up from the audience to eat some very weird/disgusting twinkie variations loaded with jam and bacon.
N8 | Bucky Balls
N8 | Centipede
N8 | Wii stations
N8 | From the art wall
Around the floor, there were classic arcade machines and some Wii stations. There was also a wall with geek art and an interactive bucky ball display.
N8 | Sesame Street
Next up was a set from VJ Mike Relm. He had an interesting mix of turntables and video. Afterwards Ask-A-Ninja showed up and killed "Justin Bieber" for his birthday.
N8 | Chit chat
Next up, Kevin had a chat with Kevin Smith, Chris Hardwirk, Doug Benson and Greg Fitzsimmons. After their storytime, it was again time for the audience to get involved. There was a celebrity make over with Chris Hardwick. Then came Mystery Bong hits with Doug Benson and the honey Badger with Kevin Smith.
N8 | Fun with Doug Benson
N8 | Kevin Smith, Greg Fitzsimmons, and the honey badger
On the way home on the Metro, I talked with some guys who went to the a nearby Street Fighter vs Tekken event. One of them wished he had Dr Manhattan powers so he could have been in both places at once. Another wanted to use Men in Black 3 time travel rules to have gone to leetUP. Fun times!
Two weeks ago, I attended the gdgt live event at Club Nokia. Saw some tech demos and got some freebies. Despite the many giveaways, I didn't win any of the Windows Phones they were giving away.
Last Sunday I had the extreme pleasure of seeing Ghostland Observatory at Club Nokia. Ghostland Observatory has a reputation for being an incredible live band. I've known about them for about 3 years but never had the chance to see them.
N8 | Sad Sad City
When I first heard about the show, I decided to get VIP tickets so I could sit down when I needed to. This was the first time I got VIP tickets at Club Nokia. It was a bit strange going into the theater from the VIP entrance. I also found it interesting that most of the seats were partitioned off with a curtain. First time I had seen that. I had a second row seat, which wasn't so great because the space in front of me was used for walking. Towards the middle of the show, I jumped into the front row since the people who had seats there never came back.
N8 | Give Me The Beat
The show was phenomenal. The music sounds a lot different live compared to on their albums. There was a also an intense laser light show that was well synced to the music. It doesn't come out well in my videos due to the fog. Towards the end of the show, I had to take my glasses off because the lasers were making me dizzy.
N8 | Silver City
My N8 only had 3 bars when I got to Club Nokia after spending most of the day checking in. I managed to record 3 songs before hitting getting the battery warning at the end of the show.
I saw Lords of Acid and My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult last Friday at Club Nokia. Thrill Kill Kult was fabulous. I was surprised they had no guitarist. Lords of Acid was strange. The new singer was mediocre while the musicians were amazing. There were a ton of back up dancers who were all dancing to their own tune as if they were in a club and not on stage.
